Mission Statement

The WOCN Society is a professional nursing society that supports its members by promoting educational, clinical and research opportunities to advance the practice and guide the delivery of expert health care to individuals with wounds, ostomies and incontinence.

We accomplish our mission by:

  • Supporting members with access to the most up-to-date professional information in the field through annual conference, products and publications and website.
  • Creating ample opportunities for members to network.
  • Working to move the profession forward on behalf of its members through its involvement on Capitol Hill.
  • Offering research opportunities through the WOCN Center for Clinical Investigation.

The WOCN Society offers comprehensive benefits to any and all healthcare professionals who are involved in providing wound, ostomy and continence patient care. When you join, you will have access to skills and resources that will help you advance your practice, deliver excellent patient care and reach your personal and professional goals.

WELCOME TO THE NORTHEAST REGION WOCN WEBSITE

Message From Our President, Cheryl Bealer, Summer 2009

As I sit in St. Louis at National Conference and peruse the literature, I am astounded by the number of
members from our Region that are involved at the National level. We are well represented on National
Committee and the Board. I lost count of the number of posters which the Northeast members had accepted
at National Conference and we were represented as presenters also. I believe this goes to show, we do have
"One Common Thread." We are not only proud of our specialty, we are good at it! We strive to keep ourselves
educated, educate others and advocate for our patients. We keep abreast of current politics and advocate
for change. We not only support our patients, but each other.

It is sad to see the lesser numbers here from our region. I know that the economy is having a great impact
on all of us. We need to remember to work leaner and meaner, smarter, not harder. We can survive this impasse.
We need to be supportive of those who face layoffs and network to find them opportunities.

It is my personal goal to continue to promote our nursing specialty. We all are valuable to our facilities.
We need to hone our skills to be able to prove our worth. Keep those statistics, show those positive outcomes!
Share your knowledge! Further your education! Let's move ahead as threads sewn together to create a
beautiful quilt of many colors. One meant to last for decades and decades as those produced by our
Amish neighbors.

Are you catching a theme here? Yes, a reminder that Fall Conference planning is well under way.
Information can be found on this website. We will be posting the brochure online. NO mailing will go out.
You will soon receive info about proposed by-law changes and the posting of the bruchure. In these hard
economic times, we need to be fiscally responsible. Most all members have access to a computer. In
meeting with other Regional Presidents, I have found the majority do all voting/newsletters and
conference brochures online. This saves thousands of dollars over all. Should you have concerns or know
someone that needs a mailing, please let me know.

Fall Conference will be held October 2-4, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza in Wyomissing (Reading), PA.
Rooms are now available. Check the website for information. The theme is "One Common Thread",
paying tribute to our Amish Heritage and expounding upon their belief in hard work, team work, and honest
work and love/caring for one another. We, as WOCNs, carry these values into our work lives every day.
Thanks goodness we have electricity and running water to facilitate our goals! Imagine! Greater Lehigh
Valley Affliliate is hard at work to provide a stimulating educational experience and a lot of fun. Please
register early!

Lastly, I would like you to venture to the news and kudos section of this website.. Many of our Regional
Members have been honored with Nursing Excellence Awards or have been involved with fantastic
philanthropic efforts. Congrats to all!

In closing, keep your chins and hears up! We have weathered other storms and came out stronger
in the end. Remember that "One Common Thread" that represents each of us can be fabricated
in to one strong rope that can pull us all, and others. along!

Respectfully Yours,

Cheryl Bealer BSN, RN, CWOCN

President Northeast Region WOCN
